At a recent informal meeting of Heads of State and Government in Budapest, Hungary, Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Commission is planning to introduce omnibus legislation aimed at simplifying sustainability reporting for businesses. This legislation, she explained, would seek to reduce bureaucracy and alleviate the reporting burdens imposed by current EU regulations, including the Taxonomy Regulation, CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) and CSDDD (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive).
“We will look, for example, at the triangle Taxonomy, CSRD, CS3D,” von der Leyen stated. While she emphasized that “the content of the laws is good,” she acknowledged that “the way we get there—the questions we are asking, the data points we are collecting, thousands of them—is too much: often redundant, often overlapping.”
Ms. von der Leyen clarified that the goal is to “reduce the bureaucratic burden without changing the correct content of the law that we all want.”
While these discussions continue, and it may take several rounds of negotiation before any omnibus legislation is finalized companies must continue to comply with the existing regulations, including CSRD, Taxonomy Article 8, and the upcoming CSDDD in accordance with their respective timelines.
